Northcote Lodge has a strong musical tradition and is privileged to have a specialist music building with a fully-equipped class music room, several practice rooms for individual music lessons and inspiring views of Wandsworth Common. All boys study class music and over half of our current pupils take individual instrumental lessons to complement the core curriculum of history, theory and composition. Our visiting music teachers offer private tuition on a wide variety of instruments, including piano, strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, singing and even bagpipes. The school provides theory lessons for boys preparing for ABRSM examinations or music scholarship trials. In recent years, Northcote boys have won music scholarships to Alleyn's and King's, Canterbury.

The school creates performance opportunities for musicians of all levels, ranging from informal class recitals to termly evening concerts, to which pupils are encouraged to bring their families and friends. The boys are invited to participate in a plethora of ensembles, including two choirs, two brass bands, woodwind ensemble, guitar ensemble and jazz band. The Chapel Choir leads a weekly morning service at St Michael's, Cobham Close, and has recently sung evensong at St. Paul's Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral. In addition to this, the music and drama departments regularly collaborate on musical productions, such as this year's performances of Oliver! and Peter Pan. Parents are warmly invited to join the Adults' Choir, which sings in the school's Carol Service.

Art & Design Technology

All boys have art lessons in our large and well-equipped art room, supervised by our Head of Art. The range of work they produce, using a wide variety of media and techniques, has to be seen to be believed, and current examples of their work are always on display.

We arrange frequent visits to the major London gallery exhibitions. Each year boys are entered for art scholarships and awards are regularly gained to major public schools.

For boys who are not so handy with a paintbrush there is the newer discipline of design technology which enables them to learn from designing and creating things from scratch, often from the most eclectic collection of materials, that are no less 'art' than the more commonly accepted forms.
